Braces Q & A

Who is a candidate for braces?

If you have orthodontic concerns like crooked teeth or trouble biting or chewing because your teeth don’t line up correctly, you may be a candidate for traditional, clear, or invisible braces. Some of the conditions that braces can address include:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Protruding teeth
  • Overcrowded teeth

The best way to determine for sure if you or your teen is a candidate for braces is to have a consultation with one of the experienced providers at Tacoma Dental Care.

What types of braces are available?

Modern braces offer several options in terms of appearance and comfort, such as:

Traditional braces

Traditional braces have metal brackets made of stainless steel that are bonded to your individual teeth. These brackets are connected to one another by wire. Your dentist tightens the wire periodically to pull your teeth into alignment over time.

Ceramic braces

Ceramic braces are similar to traditional braces, but the brackets are made of a durable ceramic material that is the same color as your tooth enamel. Ceramic braces are less obvious than metal braces.

Clear braces

Clear braces have brackets and wires are made of clear plastic. Most people find clear braces to be even less noticeable than ceramic braces.

Clear aligners

Clear aligners are sometimes called “invisible braces.” Aligners are a series of removable trays that gradually shift your teeth over time. You wear one tray for several weeks, then switch to the next tray until your treatment plan is complete.

Which type of braces is right for me?

Invisible aligners may be an option if you have mild straightening goals. Veneers are another option for mildly crooked teeth.

For more complex orthodontic concerns, fixed braces may be the best option. Very severe or complicated cases typically require traditional metal braces. For some conditions, a spacer, retainer, or another type of orthodontic device may also be part of your treatment plan.
